Ailing Father of GuantanamoBay Detainee Dies Without Seeing His Son

Manama : The father of Bahrain's most famous detainee at GuantanamoBay, Juma Al Dossary, died on Tuesday evening without seeing his son, a family member yesterday told Gulf News.

"It was very sad because the father has been suffering from throat cancer for a long time and his family has continuously pleaded with the US authorities to allow his son to see him on campassionate grounds and bid him adieu, but there was no response," the relative of the deceased, said.

Mohammad Al Dossary, the father, was admitted to the intensive care unit at Dammam Hospital, Saudi Arabia, last September following complications.

His son has been kept at Guantanamo since January 2002, a few months after he was arrested in Pakistan.

He has tried to commit suicide 13 times since his incarceration, including an attempt last year in the presence of his lawyer Joshua Colangelo-Bryan.

Earlier this month, the lawyer visited Al Dossary, the divorced father of a young girl, and informed him about his visit to Bahrain where he met members of his family.

Activist Nabeel Rajab, from the dissolved Bahrain Centre for Human Rights, who has been responsible for co-ordinating between relatives of the Guantanamo detainees, lawyers in the US and the media, mourned the death of Mohammad Al Dossary, saying that it was a terrible tragedy for Juma and the family.
