Close Guantanamo

Letter to the Editor
The Chicago Sun-Times
June 14, 2006

In light of the group suicide at our military prison of torture at Guantanamo ["Three at Guantanamo kill themselves," news story, June 11], it is time for Americans to join the worldwide community and human rights advocates to demand the closing of this blot on American integrity. Every day that we hold people as young as children in that hellhole without due process we give credence to those who accuse our country of hypocrisy.

This administration has subverted the very principles upon which this nation was founded in order to perpetuate its own immoral torture of detainees in clear violation of the Geneva Conventions that all presidents have signed off on since their acceptance by the nations of the world.

President Bush and his advisers have destroyed U.S. credibility globally through foisting upon the American people a false dichotomy: We must subvert and betray the fundamental tenets of our democracy in order to safeguard national security. When it comes to Guantanamo, this is a false dichotomy for the very existence of this place of inhumane torture offers our enemies a highly effective recruitment tool for terrorists and a profound example of our failure to stand for justice and human rights.

Ed Juillard, Morgan Park
