KUWAITI FAMILY MEMBERS ENCOURAGED BY RELEASE OF TWO MORE DETAINEES FROM GUANTANAMO
Tuesday, September 12, 2006
Mr. Khalid Al-Odah, father of Kuwaiti detainee Fawzi Al-Odah, released the following statement in reaction to the news that Kuwaiti officials have been informed over the weekend of the imminent release of the two prisoners, identified as Omar Rajab Amin and Abdullah Kamel al-Kandari:
“I am grateful to the Emir of Kuwait who has worked tirelessly for the release of the two prisoners from Guantanamo Bay to Kuwait. Nevertheless, I continue to be concerned about the well-being of the other four remaining Kuwaiti detainees who have been held for over 1,700 days without any due process afforded by customary international law of civilized societies. I pray that all detainees will soon be afforded basic due process by being given a fair hearing and either charged or released to their home countries as soon as possible."
In addition to Mr. Khalid Al-Odah, attorney David Cynamon, lawyer for the Kuwaiti Family Committee, also released the following statement:
“We welcome this decision to release Mr. Amin and Mr. Kamel al-Kandari and sincerely hope that Fawzi Al-Odah and others remaining in detention and legal limbo will soon have the chance to prove their innocence.”
